A private, nonprofit, non-tax supported medical center with 49 beds, UnityPoint Health - Grinnell Regional Medical Center serves more than 47,000 residents in Poweshiek, Jasper, Benton, Iowa, Mahaska and Tama counties. With about 50 physicians and advanced practice clinicians and 400 employees, we are the largest hospital in Iowa between Des Moines and Iowa City.

Location Details

Free parking for patients and visitors is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the lot directly in front of the medical center's main entrance. Patients and visitors are asked not to park in reserved areas or marked designated areas. Parking is allowed on the emergency room ramp for patients being seen in the emergency room.

We are proud to offer a full spectrum of care, providing our patients access to traditional and specialty surgical services including bariatrics, ENT, general, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry, thoracic, trauma and urology. Bariatric Surgery Quality Distinctions

We're one of only a few rural hospitals with the distinction of Bariatric Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).

This demonstrates the high quality of our hospital, staff and procedures.

Since 2006, we have recieved the highly respected Wellmark Blue Cross® and Blue Shield® with a Blue Distinction® Center+ for Bariatric Surgery. This designation means we have good outcomes for overall patient safety and bariatric procedures.

Available on a walk-in basis, without a doctor's order.

UnityPoint Health - Grinnell Regional Medical Center offers several blood tests to help you best monitor your health. We're here to make it convenient for you to stay on top of your key numbers for your best health.

  • Wellness screenings are available without an appointment.
  • Come to the hospital admitting area to request the screenings you need.
    • Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
    • Saturday, 7 a.m. to Noon
  • Cash, check or credit card payment is due at the time of the test. We don't require a physician's order for the test or ask for health insurance.

Nutritional Services

The Nutrition Therapy Department at UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC) offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient services and programs from registered dietitian nutritionists to keep you healthy. Eating a healthy and balanced diet reduces your chances of developing heart disease, cancer, obesity, osteoporosis, stroke, anemia, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. 

Individual Nutrition Counseling

The Nutrition Therapy Department offers one-on-one nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian. Physician referrals are required and can be faxed to the dietitians at (641) 236-2044.

Educational Classes

Our registered dietitians offer educational opportunities about how you can help manage your health with your overall eating pattern.

Diabetes Support Group. The group meets the second Monday night of the odd months of the year. It is free and open to the public. Each meeting covers a different diabetes-related topic.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Nutrition Class. This class is offered to all patients who participate in our Cardiac Rehabilitation program. This class covers topics to help you find ways to incorporate heart-healthy eating into your lifestyle.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Nutrition Class. This class is offered to all patients who participate in our Pulmonary Rehabilitation program. This class covers topics related to healthy eating in the setting of pulmonary disease.

Community/Worksite Wellness Presentations. The dietitian can prepare nutrition-related presentations or booths for your community event or health fair. Please contact dietitians to inquire about availability.

Chemotherapy & Infusion

Chemotherapy and Infusion Suite

Receive your chemotherapy, injections and infusion treatments close to home. Located on the first floor of Grinnell Regional Medical Center, the Auxiliary Chemotherapy and Infusion Suite was made possible thanks to a generous donation from the GRMC Auxiliary and other donors. For assistance getting your physician orders to the Auxiliary Chemotherapy & Infusion Suite or to schedule a walk-through tour, please call (641) 236-2395.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Cardiac Rehabilitation

The cardiac rehabilitation department at UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center is a Phase II program that provides monitored exercise and educational instruction to outpatients with heart disease. The education may cover topics such as risk modification, nutrition, medications, exercise plans and stress reduction.

  • Phase II cardiac rehabilitation is for patients after discharge from the hospital who have experienced a qualifying cardiovascular event or procedure.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Our comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation program assists individuals with chronic lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema and chronic bronchitis. 

  • Admission to the pulmonary rehabilitation program requires the patient have a medical diagnosis of a chronic respiratory condition. pulmonary function testing that shows moderate to severe COPD.
  • We also see patients with other respiratory diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea and asthma. These patients should also have had a pulmonary function test completed, but there are no minimum requirements.

The goal of the outpatient program is to help patients function at their highest capacity through strength training and exercise, medical management, nutrition education and emotional support. The  program also encourages self-management, to decrease symptoms and complications, and ideally, reduce hospitalizations.

Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Scholarship

We recognize the critically important role EMS holds for the overall health and well-being of our local communities and the challenge these vital services are facing. In response, UnityPoint Health - Grinnell Regional Medical Center medical staff voted in 2022 to fund a scholarship for emergency medical service (EMS) students or services in Poweshiek County and surrounding areas.

  • The scholarship provides up to $750 of reimbursed cost to a student affiliated with local EMS or local EMS departments upon completion of an authorized EMS training program.
  • New and existing EMS volunteers are encouraged to apply.
