Overview

The UnityPoint Health – Des Moines Family Medicine Residency Program, with tracks at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines and Allen Hospital in Waterloo Track, welcome both third- and fourth-year medical students to join us for rotations.

Inpatient Service

This is a hospital-based clerkship rotation, involving daily work and attending rounds. Responsibilities include following two to three patients at any one time. This includes history and physical examinations, daily progress notes, ordering of appropriate labs and diagnostic tests. The medical student may take call with a senior resident which is approximately two nights per month.

Outpatient Rotation

This is a hands-on rotation. The medical student will evaluate patients regarding pertinent history and physical examination. Prior to staffing a patient, the student will develop a differential diagnosis, diagnostic and laboratory plan and treatment plan. In addition, they will attend medical conferences daily. Several days per month, they will attend our free OB clinic where they will evaluate primarily Hispanic patients in various antepartum stages.
